By the end of this tutorial, you will understand how to create different types of curls–spiral curls, barrel curls, and everything in-between.

Six Methods for Curling Hair

Before we get started, here are some advice for curling your hair:

We advise you to practice with your flat or curling iron in the OFF position. I realize it seems absurd. However, this will enable you to practice these hair curling methods without risking burns. Turn on the heat and curl your hair once you feel more assured.
When curling hair, always use a heat-protectant spray. To maintain the health of your hair, use heat protection when necessary. Heat can damage the inner structure of the hair and even shorten the life of the gorgeous color you spent money on at the salon in addition to simply drying out the hair.

392° F. That is the highest temperature that should be used to prevent dulling and fading of hair color. In order to achieve better curls with less harm to your hair, lower the temperature of your irons and slow down.

We will be using the following products and tools in our instructions for hair curling:
a flat iron used by pros.
a professional Marcel curling iron or a spring-loaded curling iron.
a sizable detangling or cutting comb.
a thermal heat spray for heat damage prevention.
brush for styling.

How to Use a Curling Iron on Your Hair

You may learn how to use your curling iron to make various sorts of curls by using these first four hair curling methods.

By wrapping the hair around the barrel of the iron and then switching directions, we’ll demonstrate how to make loose curls.

tight curls by twisting the hair before wrapping it around the barrel or wrapping it around the barrel in a flat motion.

Then, using two of these four methods in combination, we will show you how to make a graceful wave. Let’s begin…

Hair that has been flat-wrapped and curled
A 1″ inch curling iron is the preferred equipment for this technique. Before using your curling iron, don’t forget to spray on some heat protection!

This method of flat wrapping results in a wide curl with lots of volume.

The final appearance will resemble a, but the degree of curl tightness is determined on the thickness and width of your sectioning.

We advise using bigger sections for this technique, between 1-12″ and 2″.

The key to getting this curl is to avoid twisting the hair when it is coiled flat on the curling iron barrel.

You must adjust your hands each time you go around the curling iron if you want to maintain the hair flat against it; otherwise, the hair will naturally want to If you have fine hair and desire more volume, this curl type is for you! Scroll down to see how it’s done.

Curl Slackly Using a Curling Iron

This method produces a loose wave with your 1″ curling iron.

Take your iron, wrap the hair around it halfway down, then reverse the wrapping motion for the whole length of the part.

A more relaxed wave will appear by switching the curl’s direction and leaving the ends out.

To protect the hair, start with the first area and sprinkle it with a thermal heat spray from a distance of at least 6″. The segment should be gathered, then raised 90 degrees with the thumb and index finger.
Put the barrel of the curling iron behind the portion and in front of the section. Face the thumbnail up while holding the portion, and flatly wrap it around the iron (do not twist the hair around the barrel when doing a flat wrap). After finishing the flat wrapping, hold the portion and roll the iron close to the scalp. Then, wait for the section to fully heat before continuing.

Remove the barrel from the hair while holding the section, then turn it so the barrel is not in front of the section. Repeat the process, flat-wrap, roll the iron, and close, placing the iron where your last curl was made.
When you reach the end of the section, use your hand and finger to separate the curls by combing through the section.

The finished product will be a very natural-looking lazy curl. Add a flexible hold hairspray to complete.

HINT: Run your finger over the hair in the iron to feel the temperature. Release the part as soon as your fingers become warm.

Curls in Spirals Using a Curling Iron

Once more, grab your 1″ curling iron and heat protectant, and let’s make a spiral-shaped curl. The hair is first twisted from the top to the ends, then wrapped around the curling iron to create that spiral effect, working in smaller sections like the flat wrap curl.

A tight spiral curl with added texture will be the end result.

To protect the hair, start by taking a tiny part and misting it with a thermal heat spray from a distance of at least 6″. From the base to the ends, twist the entire area. The hair segment can alternatively be braided rather than twisted.
Here, it’s important to twist the portion in the same way as you wrap it around the curling iron. Twist and wrap away from your face in an outward motion if you wish to curl away from it.
Your curling iron should be heated up before you wrap the entire twisted section around it.
Take out the curling iron, then let it cool. When you’ve curled your hair all over your head, shake it out with your fingers to make it looser and give it more volume.
HOT TIP: Allow your spiral curls to really cook! Spiral curls collapse because they either didn’t get enough heat or they didn’t cool long enough to set the style!

Waves on the red carpet using a curling iron

For this technique, a wand or curling iron can be utilized. Start out using the Flat Wrap method, but as you wrap the hair around the iron, twist the section as you would when using the Spiral Curl method.

Although this curling iron technique is more challenging, the end result is a soft yet stunningly dramatic wave.

To protect the hair, start with the first area and sprinkle it with a thermal heat spray from a distance of at least 6″. With the help of your thumb and index finger, gather the portion and direct it over the client’s eye. Put the barrel of the curling iron behind the portion and in front of the section.
(Always keep the hair on your fingers close to the barrel.) Face the thumbnail up while holding the segment, twist the hair so the thumbnail is towards the floor, then slide down and wrap. Ensure that the thumbnail remains in close proximity to the barrel as you slide the hair up it without shutting the blade. (Closing the barrel’s blades will result in lines of demarcation inside the crest).

Wrap, twist, thumbnail up, thumbnail down, wrap, twist, thumbnail up, thumbnail down, then wrap again until the section is finished. When you reach the end of the segment, let go of the curling iron-wielding arm while still holding onto the portion. Turn the curling iron in the opposite way for greater tension while holding the end of the portion with your fingernail and letting the heat do its work. (The twist, which is the crest, and the flat wrap, which is the valley, create the tension in the twists as a result.)
Release the thumb, then place the palm of the hand directly beneath the curling iron’s barrel. When the hair is released from the barrel, catch it in your palm.

(If a section of hair is simply dropped without being caught, it will expand and become loose.) Spray two coats of a solid hold hairspray while holding the part in your palm. The segment should be pancaked and compressed in both palms (the hair will be quite heated!). Patience is a virtue as you let the hair cool. Let go of the portion in your palm.
Comb through the section of hair with your Sam Villa Styling Brush, stopping briefly to allow the waves to relax at the bottom.
Your loose waves will appear once you release the section. Use Redken Diamond Oil for extra shine and to add a light oil serum to help control frizz.

How to Flat Iron Curl Your Hair

We’ll introduce two distinct ways to curl your hair with an in the next two procedures. The ribbon curl is a modest, initial twist action combined with tension to produce a tight flat iron curl. By shaping the hair into an s shape and only tapping the flat iron down the section, the push wave gives a look that is loose and natural. Are you prepared?

How to Flat Iron a Ribbon Curl

Using your curling iron once again, the ribbon curl is a tight curl with extra bounce and resembles a ringlet curl.

As you insert the iron diagonally into the hair section, slowly rotate it a half turn and slide it down the length of the hair section. The tight ribbon curl is produced by the half turn and tension.

The ribbon curl persists for days and gradually transforms into a curl resembling a beach wave as the days go by.

Take a medium-sized part that is 1 inch long by 1 inch wide, and prepare it with thermal heat spray. With the flat iron vertical and your palm facing the head, hold the part in one hand and the iron in the other.
Pinch base of section while folding hand so that palm is facing you (still holding the section with left hand). When you release the hair from the flat iron at the end of the hair shaft, the hair will spring into a ribbon curl.
Shaking out the curls with your hands and finishing with a flexible hold hairspray to hold the curls in place are both recommended.
Holding the hair in place, use your Sam Villa Styling Brush to comb through the area to the ends.at the bottom for a few seconds to relax the waves.
Release the section and your loose waves appear. Add some light oil serum to help tame any frizz and for extra shine, we suggest using Redken Diamond Oil.

With a Flat Iron, Push Waves
(also known as a S Wave)
We will switch to our flat iron for this curling method. The push wave is a natural-looking finish.

The push wave is made by shaping your hair into a S shape, then using your flat iron to tap over the waves.

Take horizontal portions while using your flat iron, being sure to first spray on a thermal heat protectant.
Start by pinching the area with your thumb and index finger close to the scalp.
When the portion is sufficiently hot, insert the iron above your pinch and start tapping over it while pressing the hair in the same direction.
To tug the hair in the other way from the last portion, lower your “pinch” and tap, tap, tap the section once more.
Concentrate on forming a “S” pattern.
Up until you reach the ends of your hair, keep doing this pushing and pulling motion.
The outcome is stunning! loose, natural waves with a different texture from those produced by a curling iron.

Don’t rush these curling iron and flat iron techniques, take your time learning them before attempting on yourself.

Most important, don’t forget your thermal spray! You don’t want to end up like the little girl on YouTube 🙂

Once you get the hang of these curling iron and flat iron techniques, get creative and combine different techniques! It’s time to get curling!
